2007 Pavi Dolcetto

Dolcetto means "little sweet one" and it refers to the smallish, early ripening red grape that the folks of Piedmont in northern Italy planted to satisfy the birds so they would move on before the prized Nebbiolo grapes for Barolo ripened. It is not widely grown in California. This particular bottling from winemaker Rob Lawson is a delicious, deeply-flavored, dark-colored red wine with lots of facets of flavor. The nose is full of bright cherry and plum aromas, while in the mouth there are pronounced flavors of ripe raspberries. The wine is lush without being overly extracted and shows excellent balance throughout the long finish. Bravo to Rob Lawson for producing a bargain of a tasty Italianesque wine. Plus, as a bonus, it is made of organically grown grapes. - Jeff Prather

Now, for a little wine geek Zinfandel trivia: It was once thought that the Italian vine Primitivo was the parent material of Zinfandel, but eventually Carole Meredith, from University of California at Davis, found the true ancestor: a grape native to Croatia. So Primitivo had to suck it up and stand on its own once again. Primitivo grown on the Salento peninsula, part of the "heel of the boot" that is Puglia, often displays rich fruit, and an earthiness that suggests sun-warmed vines and dry, dusty soils. It is a very evocative quality, and while difficult to put into words, is one of our favorite aspects of southern Italian reds. This one exhibits a very ripe character with a spicy sweet raspberry note showing a touch of white pepper on the long, lightly earthy finish. - Jeff Prather

One sip of this classically styled white wine from older vines in the Macon region of Burgundy reveals volumes of what Chardonnay can be like from this area. It is clean, unadorned with oak. Beautifully light yellow in color, it has a lovely bouquet, bursting with tart apple fruit flavors. This wine truly shows the greatness of Chardonnay with purity of fruit, ripeness, balance, racy acidity, and clarity of flavor.
In essence, this wine is showing Burgundy off to the world for what it truly can offer, and that is substantial. On top of that, the wines of the Macon represent excellent value in the pricey world of great Burgundy. So this wine from a variety of villages in Macon has it all-pedigree, vintage, aroma, flavor, and a bargain to boot. Drink up! - Jeff Prather

This wine is made by our friend John Lancaster, wine director from San Francisco favorite Boulevard Restaurant right across the street from the Ferry Plaza. John, along with his friend and fellow sommelier at Boulevard, Robert Perkins, are co-proprietors of Skylark.
Pinot Blanc, which is a relative of Chardonnay, has a similar set of flavors. In northern Italy, Alsace and in Austria it is almost always produced without any oak influence - the opposite of the typical approach with Chardonnay. In style it is a nod to Alsace, where Pinot Blanc usually has a little more body than those from Fruili or Trentino-Alto Adige. The grape obviously thrives in the cooler climes of Mendocino County where it ripens but maintains its bright fruit intensity. This version shows lovely flavors of yellow apple and melon balanced by excellent acidity, and a nice citrusy finish. - Jeff Prather

The David Arthur Estate is located high on Pritchard Hill, on the eastern side of the Napa Valley. The rough mountain terrain and rocky red soils provide ideal growing conditions for wine grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1978, Donald Long and his 28 year old son David founded the winery. Wanting to fulfill his desire of producing a fine Meritage blend, David set out to find clones of the five classic Bordeaux varietals.
On his travels, he came across Sangiovese, which stole the spotlight from any Malbec he had ever tasted. Bob had the brilliant idea to name the wine "Meritaggio" in honor of Sangiovese's Italian Heritage. A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Sangiovese, 6% Merlot, 3% Petite Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, this densely colored dark ruby red wine is packed with complex aromas beginning with baked cherry, plum and cassis. It also exhibits light layers of earth, warm sage, mint and tobacco. The palate is layered with baked fruit cake, wild currants, and blackberries with a long firm tannin finish and the persistence of Sangiovese texture.
Recommended Cellaring: 3 to 7 years, for a very young wine it is remarkably delicious for drinking today, yet this red blend can age several years yielding added smoothness, complexity and depth of flavor. - Jeff Prather

The Sonoma Coast is one of the latest regions in California to become deservedly well known for the ability to grow top notch Pinot Noir. The cool coastal climate and lingering fog help to create ideal conditions for growing this finicky grape. The resulting flavors of bright, tangy red cherry have lovely depth and concentration on their own. When spiced with a modest amount of oak, the wine becomes rich and satisfying with a hint of vanilla on the finish.
This delightful Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast smells of tart cherries and cola. Friendly in texture and flavor, this wine has ample acidity to enhance the plum and cherry flavors on the palate. It is a fairly typical California Pinot Noir that is very drinkable with round fruit and wonderful depth of flavor and color. Surh Luchtel, a producer of premium wines based in Napa Valley, is the result of a collaboration between two long time friends Don Surh and Gary Luchtel.
Recommended Cellaring: 2 to 5 years, this bold and memorable Pinot Noir shows beautifully now and should continue to improve for years to come, greatly rewarding the patient owner with lush, complex fruit and silky texture. - Jeff Prather

A blend of 50% Petite Sirah, 36%Syrah, and 14% Malbec, this wine is perfect for the adventurous wine lover. This unique blend is crafted to be very drinkable yet interesting on the palate. Showing berry fruit flavors upfront, this wine opens to a touch of earthiness and spice. The meaty flavors of Syrah show through the blend with a note of leathery fruit. There is a core of grapey ripeness that keeps the palate remarkably rich with fruit.
Amazingly smooth, the Row Five Red is so versatile it proves to be appropriate for any occasion. This wine is as comfortable alongside a chateaubriand on a white table cloth as it is next to a plate of ribs on a red checkered picnic table at a BBQ! This charming red wine is made exclusively from estate grapes. Alder Springs Vineyard is a source of fruit for some of the top names in the red wine business, including such luminaries as Pax, Relic, Copain, and Patz & Hall. This is one of the top vineyards in Mendocino and one of the most respected in northern California. They are meticulous farmers.
Recommended Cellaring: 1 to 3 years, this is a young vibrant wine that has the ability to age for a few years yet it can be enjoyed today, this wine can improve with time in your cellar but is charming to drink now. - Jeff Prather
