Rosso de Veo is produced from younger vine Sagrantino grape grown mostly in the Cerrete vineyard in the Montefalco region. This light red wine is an exotic tangy adventure in flavors and texture. The concentrated cranberry flavors are accented with high acidity, making for a bright, thrilling wine with a clean finish that would cut through the heartiest of dishes. The wine is aged one year in stainless steel tanks, two years in large oak barrels and another year in the bottle. This is definitely a food wine best paired with rich Italian dishes. - Jeff Prather

This blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Counoise from Redortier reflects the charm of the twin sisters that run the property. It is ripe, round, and smooth with lovely blackberry flavors and a hint of peppery spice on the long finish. Barbera is the most widely planted grape in Piemonte where it generally plays second fiddle to Nebbiolo, of Barolo and Barbaresco fame. This lovely Le Grive is an intriguing blend of the high acid Barbera grape paired with the softer Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) for a contrast of opposites that create a wonderful whole. This is a great example of complementary synergies. It is riper and softer than most Barbera due mostly to the blend of Pinot Noir, with sweet round fruit and a lovely smooth finish. - Jeff Prather

This tasty little white blend from Kenefick Ranch is a Rhone-style blend of 40% Marsanne, 40% Grenache Blanc, and 20% Viognier. The Viognier certainly comes out in the charming floral nose, until the melon and minerals of the other two white grapes start to creep in on the mid-palate, creating a round and creamy finish. This refreshing white was barrel fermented, but only in neutral French oak barrels so the wood is very subtle. These grapes are all Estate grown on the 125 acre property of Dr. Thomas Kenefick in Calistoga. - Jeff Prather

We are used to seeing Gruner Veltliner from Austria, but this beauty is from Italy and exhibits exotic flavors and textures not usually found in Gruner Veltliner. Instead of being bright and citrusy, this version is lush and full, with notes of almond on the finish, boasting ripe flavors and 13% alcohol. In short, it is delicious but bears little resemblance to other wines made from Veltliner. This wine comes from the northern Italian region of Alto Adige where the distinction between Italian and Germanic heritage becomes blurred. Such is the strong influence of German culture in this region. The language, dress, and food all reflect the German heritage of this area. - Jeff Prather

This is a clean crisp white wine from Italy made from an ancient grape of the Piemonte region. An indigenous variety of Piemonte, it has not shared the resurgence that Arneis has, and for some years it looked like it truly was heading for extinction. Erbaluce is an interesting variety but requires careful handling. It has fairly high acidity, which is a benefit providing the fruit is generous enough to balance it. The style of this Erbaluce is rich but not overpowering, with almond and mineral nuances. It exhibits tree fruit notes of pear and yellow apple along with fresh and clean acidity. - Jeff Prather

One of the few advantages of global warming is the ripeness coming out of growing areas that have struggled for heat in the past. The 2011 vintage in Germany is being heralded as one of the best, continuing a string of superb years. This stunning example of Trocken (dry) Riesling has thrilling acidity and is very expressive on the palate. It offers flavors of green apple, citrus, tangerines, and kumquats. When the Fetzer family sold their very successful winery in Mendocino to a conglomerate a number of years ago, they all signed an agreement that prevented them from launching a new winery for an extended period. That agreement, fortunately, has now expired. John fetzer has re-entered the wine arena with organically farmed Saracina Winery, the producer of Atrea wines. This refreshing pink wine is made from organic Malbec grapes from the Skid Row Vineyard and carries the perfume of rose petals and muscat. It has a light touch of fruit in the middle of wild raspberries and is balanced by clean, citrusy acid with a lean, bright finish. Refreshing value!

We see so few wines coming from the Savoie area in this country. This wine is made in an elegant, crisp style. It is lean and a bit austere in flavor with bright quince and yellow apple notes. It has some exotic character with lots of bright acidity, and flavors of lime zest on the long, clean finish. Most white wines from this region are typically made from the local Jacquere grape grown in vineyards nestled in the French Alps. However, this wine is a bit unusual in that it is made from 100% Altesse, typically a blending grape. This wine, like many of the wines of the region, is lean, delicious and refreshing, It is light in body, light in alcohol, alive and kicking on the palate, bone dry, and crisp at the finish. - Jeff Prather

This is another stunning example of what great wines are coming out of the Southern Rhone in the 2009 vintage. This wine literally bursts from the glass with spicy flavors of smoked meat, dark berries, and a delicate earthy finish with great acidity. It is comprised of the famous Rhone trio: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre grapes. It is very dark in color and quite concentrated in flavor with extracted blackberry fruit, grippy tannins, and a rich, elegantly long finish. This is very drinkable today, but will absolutely shine with a few years of age. - Jeff Prather

One sip and you are given a clue that this wine was grown in a warm region in the south. It is one of the few 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre) wines from the Yecla region, aged in stainless steel. It has ripe, wild raspberry aromas with a juicy fruit quality that is accompanied by a touch of earth or terroir. Sin Madera means without wood, so the fruit is clear to shine through. It is cheerful on the tongue and friendly in its texture: smooth, round, bright, spicy and juicy. It is ever so easy to drink and for that reason may prove a touch dangerous. The delicious flavors make it worth the risk. This is a bargain quaffer. - Jeff Prather
