This bright, approachable red wine from the hilly region of Umbria in Montefalco is a product of the cooler climate at altitude. The concentrated cranberry flavors are accented with high acidity, making for a easy-drinking wine with a clean finish that would cut through the heartiest of dishes. Dolcetto means "little sweet one" and it refers to the smallish, early ripening red grape that the folks of Piedmont in northern Italy planted to satisfy the birds so they would move on before the prized Nebbiolo grapes for Barolo ripened. It is not widely grown in California. This particular bottling from winemaker Rob Lawson is a delicious, deeply-flavored, dark-colored red wine with lots of facets of flavor. The nose is full of bright cherry and plum aromas, while in the mouth there are pronounced flavors of ripe raspberries. The wine is lush without being overly extracted and shows excellent balance throughout the long finish. Bravo to Rob Lawson for producing a bargain of a tasty Italianesque wine. Plus, as a bonus, it is made of organically grown grapes. - Jeff Prather

Tierra Alta Vineyard is in the upper reaches of Ballard Canyon, which is in the Santa Ynez Valley. The 1200 ft elevation and clay/limestone soils result in a wine that is the most delicate of the three Grenache-based wines made by Comartin Cellars, with expressive red cherry and pomegranate fruit, bright acidity and gentle tannins.Peter Granoff

This Rhone-style wine made by winemaker Tim Milos is a careful blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Counoise. For California jammy fruit fans, beware. Loomis wines are special exceptions to the Napa fruit parade, offering bright, clean and pure old world flavors. There is a definite Rhone-ish spiciness to go along with the complex fruit character of these flavorful grapes that is balanced by ample acidity. The aromas and flavors are dominated with Syrah characteristics such as leather and earth. For the price, there is a lot of flavor packed in this bottle. - Jeff Prather

This blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Counoise from Redortier reflects the charm of the twin sisters that run the property. It is ripe, round, and smooth with lovely blackberry flavors and a hint of peppery spice on the long finish. This wine is nicely structured with fine tannins that support the fruit but don't intrude on the flavors. This is a delicious value from the Rhone. - Jeff Prather

Barbera is the most widely planted grape in Piemonte where it generally plays second fiddle to Nebbiolo, of Barolo and Barbaresco fame. This lovely Le Grive is an intriguing blend of the high acid Barbera grape paired with the softer Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) for a contrast of opposites that create a wonderful whole. This is a great example of complementary synergies. It is riper and softer than most Barbera due mostly to the blend of Pinot Noir, with sweet round fruit and a lovely smooth finish. - Jeff Prather

It was their legendary Highliner Pinot Noir that was one of the major wine stars of that quirky movie. Now, for a little wine geek Zinfandel trivia: It was once thought that the Italian vine Primitivo was the parent material of Zinfandel, but eventually Carole Meredith, from University of California at Davis, found the true ancestor: a grape native to Croatia. So Primitivo had to suck it up and stand on its own once again. Primitivo grown on the Salento peninsula, part of the "heel of the boot" that is Puglia, often displays rich fruit, and an earthiness that suggests sun-warmed vines and dry, dusty soils. It is a very evocative quality, and while difficult to put into words, is one of our favorite aspects of southern Italian reds. This one exhibits a very ripe character with a spicy sweet raspberry note showing a touch of white pepper on the long, lightly earthy finish. - Jeff Prather

This is fairly typical ripe Chardonnay from the Santa Lucia Highlands near Monterey. The nose has plenty of ripe fruit and some oak spiciness while the flavors are round, rich and loaded with bright yellow apple wrapped around a core bright acidity. There is a light oak richness on the finish giving hints of caramel and cream yet the wine remains subtle and clean. - Jeff Prather
