Bodegas Roda was founded in 1987 on the banks of the Ebro River in Haro, La Rioja, by Mario Rotllant Sola and Carmen de Aguilera Daurella. (They took the first two letters of each of their last names for the name RO-DA.) They sustainably farm old-vine vineyards of only indigenous varietals of Rioja; Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano and exclusively produce estate wines. They are best known for their age-worthy Roda, Roda I and Roda II Reserva bottlings but also make this Sela wine which is meant for more immediate consumption. This 2012 Sela bottling is a blend of 96% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 1% Garnacha and was aged for 12 months in 50% new and 50% used French oak barrels. The nose offers classic Rioja aromas of cherry, spice and earth but well deovid of any sweet American oak scents. The palate is silky and fresh with more cherry and darker red fruits and the wine ends with a sexy flourish of silky and refined tannins. A great bottle of Rioja!
