Bodegas Riojanas was founded in 1890, making it one of the original producers in Rioja in the same generation as Lopez de Heredia. Rioja was the first wine region in Spain to obtain DO status in 1925 and was promoted to DOCa (Qualified Designation of Origin) which is a "higher category reserved for wines maintaining a proven consistency and quality over a long period of time," in 1991. Bodegas Riojanas controls over 300 hectares of vineyards in Rioja Alta, planted primarily to Tempranillo but they own some of the largest acreage of Mazuelo and Graciano. They are most famous for their red Riojas under the Monte Real and Vińa Albina names but also produce smaller amounts of white wines with this Puerta Vieja Blanco. It is 100% Viura (the main white grape in Rioja) that was fermented in stainless steel and released without further bottle ageing to preserve the vitality and freshness of the wine. It is light to medium bodied with good concentration. It's nice to find a white Rioja that has more than just bright acidity going for it. This has pretty white floral aromas and textured, flavorful tropical fruit.
