The village of Lieser is famous for its castle or "schloss" which was built in 1875 and proudly overlooks the Mosel River below. The winery at Schloss Lieser was constructed in 1904 and it also became famous over the years for its high quality wine, that is until the 1970s when it was sold and changed hands over the next decade, as the quality and attention to detail deteriorated. Thomas Haag became the General Manager and Cellar Master in 1992 in charge of rejuvenating the operation and he took full control by purchasing the winery in 1997. Thanks to his concerted efforts, Schloss Lieser is known once again for its high quality and even won the coveted Winery of the Year for Germany in 2014 from Gault & Millau. This 2013 Riesling Kabinett is a great example of this renewed quality which we have noticed only specifically in the past few vintages. The nose is lovely with bright aromas of apple, peach, white flowers and slate which all follow onto the palate making for a fresh, juicy and very appealing Riesling. The finish is slightly off-dry with a clean note of wet stone at the end.
