Most of Weingut Knebel's vines are in four of the lower Mosel's premier sites of Röttgen, Uhlen, Hamm and Brückstück, from which they produce individual Cru bottlings. For the grapes that don't go into those cru wines, they ferment them separately and use the best lots to blend together into this Riesling Von den Terrassen wine. Matthias Knebel, the winemaker, chooses not to qualify his wines under the Prädikat system, which indicates the level of residual sugar, e.g. Kabinett, Spätlese, etc., because he prefers the wine to be known for its terroir and place of origin rather than its overall sweetness. This wine has a deep golden color which ironically might provide the hint that this is indeed a slightly off dry Riesling. The nose is complex, offering varying degrees of a faint petrol essence with surprising scents of fresh cut wood or sawdust (even though this wine saw no oak) and aromas of bruised yellow apple, all underlined with a marked minerality. The flavors on the clean and fresh palate run more towards golden apple, spiced pear and stone fruits that have a lift and vivacity to them more in the savory than fruity realm. The wine finishes with great acidity, a nice hit of spice and that classic wet stone minerality we all love in Riesling. It's perfect for the autumn season!
