Don't let the $18.50 price tag fool you. This is a seriously good Chianti that even Robert Parker gets excited about. If Count Guicciardini had his way, the wine wouldn't even be labeled as Chianti. The Fattoria di Lucignano estate is located around the historic medieval town of Lucignano in Tuscany. It sits within the appellation of Chianti Colli Fiorentini, or the zone of Chianti in the hills that literally lead down to the city of Florence. It is only a mile outside the western border of Chianti Classico and is "the finest cru of the appellation with its fine microclimate and unique soil characteristics, where the Canaiolo grape seems to thrive like nowhere else in the entire Chianti zone." The Count's family has been in the area for 9 centuries and has been making wine since 1546. According to family records, the Lucignano cru was historically more sought after than Chianti Classico. The estate covers 32 hectares of vineyards planted also of course to Sangiovese, as well as Colorino and Merlot. This 2010 is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo and the rest Colorino with a little Merlot. It exhibits all the classic notes we've come to expect from Chianti (whether the Count accepts that or not) with violet floral and subtly spicy aromas, black cherry flavors, nice acidity and fairly supple tannins. It is an amazing value.

The Campania region is home to many important ancient Roman sites and vineyards with old, often forgotten varietals. Thankfully there are people in the area who appreciate the historical significance of their region and have worked tirelessly to save those old grapes from extinction. Cantina Giardino is one such example of a group of six friends who came together "with the specific aim of preserving old vineyards and native varietals within our home of Irpinia." Their objective is to partner with growers who have been working their vines traditionally (low intervention/no chemical use) for generations but were at risk of having to abandon them or sell their land to bigger producers who would pull the vines and re-plant to more modern varietals. So they only source fruit from older vines (50+ years) planted mainly to Aglianico, Coda di Volpe, Greco and Fiano, from five different vineyard sites for a total of 6 hectares, including a 2.5 hectare site they recently purchased. All the fruit is hand harvested and vinification takes place in a variety of vessels; oak or cherry wood barrels, stainless steel tanks, demi-muits and fiberglass and clay amphorae. We tasted three different Aglianicos and felt that this "Nude" bottling was showing the best and it just happens to be the flagship wine of the Cantina. The fruit comes from a cooler and higher elevation vineyard in Irpina whose vines are between 90-100 years old. It was fermented in chestnut acacia barriques and was aged for two years in French tonneau and for an additional two years in bottle. It is a very elegant wine, which is sometimes hard to do with Aglianico, with great structure and balance. Only 250 cases were made.

The Argiano villa near Mount Amiata, one of the highest peaks in Tuscany, was built between 1581 and 1596, the era during which wine production began in the newly constructed cellar. Before then and for several centuries later the property has been under different ownership by various noble families, until the 19th century when Lady Ersilia Caetani Lovatelli took over and promoted Argiano wines "in the finest cultural circles of the time." In 1967, Argiano was among a few other historical producers in the area to found the Brunello Consortium. In 1992, Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano inherited the property and began working with the famous oenologist, Giacomo Tachis, to renovate and modernize the cellars and expand the vineyard holdings. However, as of last year, the Argiano estate is no longer owned by Italian nobles because it was purchased by "a group of Brazilian businessmen." Thankfully, though, throughout all this turnover, Argiano wines have maintained their high quality and remain a standard bearer for Brunello di Montalcino. The fruit that goes into the Brunello bottlings comes from their "most noble vines" and is aged for the first year in French barriques and Tonneaux of different sizes, then in large Slovenian oak casks for the second year to "allow the wine to achieve balance" and is then transferred to concrete tanks. The finished wine typically displays the Argiano style of concentrated fruit with a round, voluptuous body and silky tannins.

Francesco Rinaldi & Figli (Sons) is one of the last true, authentic, old-school, "traditional" Barolo producers still making wine today. Giovanni Rinaldi founded the family winery in 1870 after he inherited a Barolo vineyard and bought the cellar where the historic cantina sits today right next to the Cannubi vineyard just outside the town on Barolo. Giovanni's son, Michele, started bottling the production under the Rinaldi name in 1906 but in 1922, there was a break in the family and the company was re-named Francesco Rinaldi, after Giovanni's youngest son. Francesco's sons Luciano and Michele ran the business through the 60s and 70s and their daughters Paola and Piera are now at the helm, continuing the traditions established over 140 years by Giovanni; long, slow fermentation and ageing in large Slovenian botti (barrels). They farm 10 hectares of vines and purchase an additional 10-15% of grapes from growers with whom they have longstanding relationships. The fruit for this 2010 Barolo comes from the communes of Barolo, La Morra and Castiglione Falletto whose vines were planted in the 1980s. It spent 3 years in botti and is thus their current release. The 2010 vintage in Barolo has been heralded as one of the best ever, but then again they've been saying that since 2004. In any case, it's a lovely, stately Barolo that shows off the incredible Rinaldi pedigree.
