The Furmint grape is indigenous to the Tokaj-Hegyalja region and shares the same genetic source with Chardonnay and Riesling. When fermented dry, Furmint is often compared to both grapes and described as having the "weight and structure of Chardonnay, the acidity and minerality of Riesling, and the fruitiness of Chenin Blanc." This 2013 dry Furmint from Gróf Degenfeld is very light, almost neutral in color and weight so it doesn't recall a Chardonnay in that manner but it definitely shows similarities to Chenin Blanc and Riesling with its slightly waxy character, expressive minerality and very bright acidity. The nose also offers pretty night jasmine-like floral aromas while the palate continues with light citrus, yellow grapefruit and candied gummy pineapple flavors. This is a very elegant and pretty wine that finishes with nice acidity and also a nice touch of residual sugar that doesn't feel overly sweet and instead softens any tartness.
