Tempranillo is the star of many Spanish wines, but much to the frustration of many it goes by different names in practically every region where it is grown. This one comes from Castilla-La Mancha (Don Quixote!) about 75 km south of Madrid. The producer is Mas Que Vinos, a project of 3 Spanish colleagues who have been consulting winemakers to clients all over Spain, and in Italy, France, Germany and South Africa. “Roble” means oaked in Spanish, and this wine spent about 5 months in a combination of French and American oak. It is fermented in stainless steel, and goes through the malolactic in cement amphorae, known in Spain as Tinajas. This is a lot of care to lavish on a $12 wine, but we are not complaining. Fruit runs mostly to the red berry and of the flavor spectrum, with bright acidity and moderate tannins. - Peter Granoff
