Dieter Solva established his winery in the small village of Niklas, high above the Adige river that cuts through the majestic valley and mountains of the Dolomites in the far north-east of Italy. It is one of the prettiest, most magnificent places in all of Italy. It actually used to be part of Austria, so most inhabitants are of Germanic descent and still speak German. Thanks to the high elevation wines from the Alto Adige have a natural acidity and freshness that makes them great partners with food. Lagrein is an indigenous variety that is often made into a rose, a dark, intense and tannic "reserve/age-worthy" style wine, or as is the case here, a lighter style medium bodied young wine meant to be consumed upon release. A lot of young Lagrein can be a bit off putting with overwhelming tannins, but this Niklas is very friendly and drinkable with just a hint of tannin on the finish. It has a light plummy fruit flavor as well as a savory quality that makes it a great pairing with braised meats and rich tomato based pastas.
