Knoll is located in the village of Unterloiben in the region of Wachau. It is one of the most revered estates in Austria and has been run by the Knoll family for decades. Emmerich II and Monika Knoll, along with their son, Emmerich III tend to the 15 hectares of vines, 45% of which are planted to Gruner Veltliner and Riesling and the remaining 5% to Chardonnay, Gelber Muskateller, Rivaner, Gelber Traminer and Pinot Noir. This 2009 Gelber Traminer Smaragd stopped us in our tracks when we tasted it. Gelber Traminer or "yellow" Traminer is a grape with yellow-green skin that is typically less aromatically intense than Gewurztraminer but is also referred to as Gewurztraminer. Whatever it is, it's intoxicating and delicious. Note the 500 ml size of the bottle and the beautiful label.
