The Bera estate is in Canelli, in the Langhe region of Piemonte, Italy between the towns of Asti and Alba. It dates back to 1785 when the Bera family purchased vineyards from the Knights of Malta who originally planted Moscato (Muscat) grapes there in the 13th century. But it wasn't until the 1970's when the family was the first in the region to produce wine under its own label, as a way to make their superior quality stand out from the oceans of inferior Moscato being rapidly overproduced. Today, they are known for making one of the most admired hand crafted (very rare for Spumante) wonderfully rich, yet delicately flavored Moscato d'Asti. The 30-hectare estate, planted mostly to Moscato, as well as Barbera and Dolcetto, has always been farmed organically and was certified in 2000.
