The Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta Piemonte estate produces primarily Barbera with some Pinot Nero from Monferrato as well as Grignolino, Barbera and Moscato from Asti, and this lovely Arneis from Roero. Arneis is an ancient varietal that was close to becoming extinct until many producers in Barolo started blending small amounts into their Nebbiolo bottlings in the 1960s. It thrives in the sandy soils of Roero where it became a DOCG in 2006. This 2012 vintage is a textbook example of the appellation with honeysuckle, tangerine, green apple and stone fruit aromas and flavors on an expansive palate that finishes on a minerally, nutty almond note. It has a fresh, vibrant character that is quite fetching on its own and is equally delicious with seafood pasta or grilled fish.
