Aglianico del Vulture became a DOC in 1971 and was elevated to a DOCG in 2011 thanks in part to its truly unique volcanic terroir as well as the acknowledgment that it could be not just one of the best wines of southern Italy, but of the whole country, on the same level as the finest wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, and certainly as age worthy as those Piemontese wines. Elena Fucci's Titolo always possesses immense structure and at the same time exudes a mysterious elegance. It's almost as if one can see the black, mineral rich volcanic soil in which the Aglianico vines are planted, through the glass. The Titolo vineyard sits at 650 meters above sea level and covers six hectares of vines which are organically farmed and harvested by hand, but not until the end of October/early November, giving the grapes great concentration. The pretty and evocative nose features exotic spices first and foremost, followed by a little cinnamon, clove, tobacco and smoke (not tobacco smoke!) and finally steeped cherries and blackberries. Those aromas expand onto the medium to full bodied palate into deeply concentrated layers of flavors. The wine finishes with the telltale firm tannins and crushed stone minerality that has been the hallmark of Titolo. This is a seriously complex wine that most definitely has a very, very long life ahead.
