Wednesday July 23rd

No reservations necessary

Please join us next Wednesday, July 22nd, any time between 4:30 and 7:30 pm, when we welcome Sashi Moorman, of Piedrasassi, to our wine bar. Sashi is the winemaker and co-owner of Piedrasassi and will present a flight of his current releases as well as the 2011 Domaine de la Cote (for whom he is also the winemaker) Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir.

Sashi, half Japanese and half American, was born in California, raised in Japan and Alaska, went to high school in Washington D.C. and got a degree in Geography at Vassar in New York. After college, he stayed in New York working in the restaurant scene and then came back out to California in 1996 to work with Adam Tolmach at Ojai Vineyard. In 2001, he became head winemaker at Stolpman Vineyards where he also worked closely with Tom Stolpman to help develop their organic vineyards. In just a few short years, he gained a national reputation as a rising star winemaker and viticulturist. New projects started to come his way, starting with the founding of Piedrasassi in 2003, with his wife Melissa Sorongon and Peter Pastan, chef and owner of Obelisk restaurant in Washington D.C. That same year he met Raj Parr, with whom he developed a few years later, Sandhi Wines and Domaine de la Cote based in Lompoc and Los Olivios where he is co-owner and winemaker.

The philosophy behind Piedrasassi is to emulate the European wines they enjoy from places like the Northern Rhone Valley and Tuscany, to try to achieve that balance of fruit, structure and moderate alcohol levels. Their signature varietal is Syrah that they source from specific sustainably and organically farmed vineyards along the Central Coast. They also produce a version of an “orange wine” they call Central Coast White that spends extended time fermenting on the skins to attain “distinctive, perfumed, non-aromatic flavors and textures reminiscent of a red wine.” The 2010 we will taste first is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Roussanne with a little Albarino. The Roussanne and Albarino were fermented conventionally, only the Sauvignon Blanc was fermented on its skins.

Please join us Friday, July 25th any time between 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome, Hallie Beaune, of Allagash Brewing Company, to our wine bar. Allie is the California Sales Rep for Allagash and will present a flight of their delicious Belgian-style beers.

Allagash Brewing Company was founded in 1995 by Rob Tod, who started in a small space outside of Portland, Maine. He had previous experience working in breweries but wanted to do something a little different on his own. With the burgeoning craft beer movement he noticed that no one was producing creative Belgian-style beers in the United States. He was a big fan of them and felt the diversity of flavors and the centuries old traditions of Belgian brewing were something the American public needed to experience.

His first release in the summer of ’95 was the Allagash White, modeled after Belgian White or “wit” beers that were made with wheat instead of barley as well as Curaçao orange peel and aromatic spices like coriander. Today, Allagash White is the flagship of the brewery and is considered one of the best Belgian-style beers made in the U.S. In 2001, Allagash took another queue from the Belgians when they started to “bottle condition” their beers, something no one else was doing at the time. Bottle conditioning is “the process of adding sugar and yeast, just prior to bottling, to allow for natural carbonation of the beer. The resulting beer is softer and more complex than traditionally carbonated beer. This “live” beer also continues to develop flavors over time, enhancing the beer drinker’s experience.”

Among the flight, we will enjoy the Allagash White, as well as two limited edition specialty brews with the Confluence and the Curieux, a Bourbon barrel aged Tripel.
