Please join us Wednesday, April 23rd from 4:30-7:30pm, as we are thrilled to welcome Samuel Guibert, head winemaker of Mas de Daumas Gassac, the “Grand Cru of the Midi” in Languedoc-Roussillon, France.

Samuel, along with his four brothers, had the good fortune to grow up on a beautiful piece of land in the Gassac Valley, about 35 kilometers north-west of the city of Montpellier. His parents, Aimé and Véronique, purchased the property in 1971 after discovering a tumbledown “mas” or farmhouse, surrounded by pine trees and “garrigue” -- scrub vegetation scented with wild rosemary, lavender and thyme. They bought the house after getting to know the Daumas family, who had owned the property for centuries, had fallen on hard times trying to maintain it and were under pressure to sell by their bank. When deciding what crops to grow on their new farm, the Guiberts discovered its ancient history of winegrowing from the time of Charlemagne, and set out to learn how to make high-quality wine in a region known at the time for decidedly inferior, mass-produced, low-quality bulk wine.

When their new friend, Henri Enjalbert, Professor of Geography at the University of Bordeaux, first visited the property, he was instantly excited about the powder-fine limestone and glacial deposits he likened to the famous terroirs of Burgundy and proclaimed, “It’s quite possible to make a Grand Cru here.” Thus, was born, Mas de Daumas Gassac. The first vineyard was planted in 1972 to Cabernet Sauvignon and the first vintage was released in 1978. But there was a lot of hard work in between, building the winery and establishing a relationship with another influential French wine expert, the esteemed Professor, Emile Peynaud, who consulted with Aimé on every aspect of winemaking and production. Thanks to their further years of collaboration with these two French Professors, the wines have received international acclaim ever since and Mr. Enjalbert’s proclamation was proven a reality.

The Mas de Daumas Gassac estate now encompasses 50 hectares of vines, all organically farmed from the very beginning, planted to 50 different varieties across 63 individual vineyard sites. The Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Pinot Noir (and about 11 other grapes) and the Mas de Daumas Blanc is a blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Petit Manseng and Viognier. Our flight will feature three vintages of the Rouge, including the library selections of 2004 and 2006, and two vintages of the Blanc.
