Aug 05, 2015 , Donkey & Goat Winery, with Tracey and Jared Brandt

4:30-7:30pm

No reservations necessary.

Please join us Wednesday, August 5th any time between 4:30-7:30 pm, when we welcome, Tracey & Jared Brandt, founders of Donkey & Goat, to our wine bar. They will present a fun flight of their current Rhône varietal releases, as well as a delightful new addition to their selection, a skin contact Pinot Gris that looks and almost drinks like a Rosé.

Eleven years ago, Tracey & Jared started something pretty cool across the bay, in the town of Berkeley. While they weren’t the first folks to open a winery there, they were the first to create a winery with the mission to “do nothing” in their winemaking, or rather, make their wines as naturally as possible without adding anything to them in the process. Their intention in doing so was not to be different – it was just how they learned about winemaking from Eric Texier when they apprenticed for him at his winery in 2002 in the Rhône Valley of France. It was their first real exposure to the winemaking process and showed them how good and honest wines could be if they were not manipulated and allowed to express their true natures regardless of what the winemaker thought they should be.

Jared and Tracey returned to the Bay Area excited to follow that philosophy themselves and started their own label. They chose Donkey & Goat as the name from a friend they met in France who had a donkey on his vineyard to eat the grass between the rows of vines. Fearing the donkey was lonely the farmer added a goat to keep him company and the two happily ate all the intrusive grass allowing the vines to thrive. Beyond the cute name, Donkey & Goat has turned into one of the most respected producers of “natural” wines and proved that Tracey and Jared were ahead of their time. Their manifesto which includes using only natural yeast fermentations, little to no sulphur added, no chemical enhancers, no plastic fermentation bins, no new oak and no machines for crushing (they foot trod all their grapes so the seeds won’t break) makes for pure, delicious and unadulterated natural wines.
