Lovely Sparklers from Around the World
It’s no secret that we love sparkling wines. They are festive and appropriate for every holiday. On the evening before Valentine’s Day last week, we started celebrating a day early with five sparkling wines from around the world.
Deena Smith of the Henry Wine Group was on hand to tell us more about the amazing line-up of bubbles featuring Italian Prosecco; Cava Rosé; sparkling Gavi from Piedmont, Italy; and two Champagnes. Here are tasting notes of the sparklers we fell in love with…
At $52/bottle, the 2010 Bisol Cartizze Prosecco di Conegliano Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG is a pricy bottle of Italian bubbly. Very good Prosecco can be found in our store for under $20, but this particular bottling is absolutely delicious and worth the splurge. It is a pale, straw color in the glass with a touch of sweetness on the palate. Elegant and persistent, this wine offers subtle notes of wildflower, green apple, and white peach. It is delightful on its own, but it would also pair beautifully with oysters or goat-cheese canapés.
Everyone at the tasting was particularly smitten with the 2010 Broglia Gavi Sparkling from Piedmont, Italy ($22/bottle). Made entirely from the Cortese grape, also known as Gavi di Gavi (which was also featured in our October Wine Club shipment), this lovely sparkler is also very light-bodied. Dry and crisp, the palate delivers ripe orchard fruit and citrus flavors that are sure to make you swoon. It’s a great fruit-forward and food-friendly alternative to Champagne!
The fifth wine of the tasting was the NV Lamiable Grand Cru Brut from Champagne, France ($56/bottle). This is a magnificently complex wine and a very good value considering its Grand Cru designation. A blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, the nose offers aromas of freshly baked biscuits and sweet fruit. Vivacious acidity along with flavors of hazelnut, baked apple, and minerals fill out the palate nicely. This is a rich and decadent Champagne to be savored with the love of your life. Enjoy it on it’s own or with strong cheeses.
Each of these wines, along with the Mas Fi Cava Rosé ($14/bottle) and the NV Henriot Blanc de Blancs ($62/bottle) are available at the store for purchase—but hurry, they won’t last long! If you would like to have any of these sparklers shipped to you, please call 415-391-9400 for assistance.
